The hate is the motive, the act is more important but we should look at the reason itself to better deal with the issues. Mens Rea is necessary in legal action.

Hate crimes should be removed completely. A person should be arrested for the crime commited and the motive for doing so should have no affect on the sentence.

Idiot. Since when are liberal political views a religious belief? Then again all the attacks against conservatives are perfectly alright according to liberals. Freedom of speech and belief is a great thing to liberals, as long as it is their beliefs only. No one tries harder to silence dissent than the left-wing liberal. Just try to share your conservative views on the street in any major city. They have you removed with the police while they yell and scream with their signs. It happened to me.

No, I disagree there are MANY people who commit horrible murders just to do it. I do say a more grousome murder diserves a more serious punishment, In court a judge dosn't want to know your motive for a crime, He wants to know IF you did It and punish the criminal based strictly on the crime. and the idea of a hate crime can result in an unfair ruling by a jury who's members may meet the criteria of the type of person that the criminal is accused of hating and that is very VERY wrong!
