When I first heard this song in the late 70's, I thought it was the most heart-breaking song ever written. Today, I still feel the same way. Still brings tears to my eyes when I hear it.

Yes. But originally, Eva doesn't sing this song at ALL. They had Madonna sing it because 1. they wanted a single, and 2. they promised to soften eva's character

They had Eva sing it so that she would become more of a victim. The broadway version of Eva is much harsher than this version.
