Industrial Ghosts - USA

June 2008Detroit was once the symbol of America's industrial power; the birthplace of Ford, the assembly line and the home of GM. But now it feels more like a ghost town littered with abandoned buildings. In 1913 Detroit was booming but when the Great Depression hit, this abruptly ended. Between 2006 and 2008 four of GM's plants in Michigan closed, and more than 15,000 are homeless in the city. "There's no work in Michigan... all you see is vacant houses" explains one homeless resident. As industries move to areas with cheaper labour, former assembly line workers and buildings are left useless.

there should be a law that says that motor companies can move only something like 20 percent of the jobs outside the U.S. if they want to still do business here. not a bad idea!!.that way GM, Ford, Walmart, etc. will give 80 percent of their jobs to americans "here in america", and still save some money with the jobs they ship outside the states.

"the automobile industry is moving to china" it's great to hear a bonafide crackhead say what ford and Gm ceo's and walmart shoppers don't realize already. Get used to seeing a lot of him if we can't start manufacturing at home. Looks like the Ceo's will have to take a pay cut.

if there are no more assembly jobs in detroit then why the hell do we need to bail out GM and Ford???So they can continue to employ canadians mexicans and asians?to build cars that they cant afford to build in detroit?let the whole stinking city be bulldozed into farmland

It is VERY sad to see what has transpired in "Motor City"!! The auto industry and the airline industry is the backbone of this great Nation! I do not know if it will EVER come back or not. We as Americans must unite for our future is at stake. Like I said, I don't know what we must do to secure our future or if the new President can do anything or not, but something is going to break at some point. We must pray for our Nation!!!

Bush, and the people who supported him, were and is still some sorry ignorants, you clearly did not care if the US was supported by NATO when you ramed into Iraq, this whitout any respeckt of the people in the country. I wonder if you knew anything about the pre war situation in iraq. I think that most Americans just thorght "war will bring us our oil" you fucked up!
