well back then, the Iranian Ayatollahs were our enemies. Isn't it only natural to follow the old saying, my enemy's enemy is my friend?? It so happened that the Iraqi government fit the bill as my enemy's enemy... Don't get me wrong, Saddam was a real S.O.B., but we wanted to get back at the Iranians for the hostage takings and the terrorist attacks, especially in Lebanon.

1993 was Clinton's first year in office, too. Spending was a big reason why the Republicans were voted into Congress in the 1994 tsunami. As for the Reagan administration, you have your version of history, and I have numbers. When you talk about "CC prosperity / paper society," Nixon ended the Bretton Woods system in 1971, and GWB returned to it and updated it in 2001. The US worked trade deals with China. That a system of pegged currencies is stable and desirable is a controversial notion.

ALL or Reagan's budgets were in the red BEFORE they even got to congress. Every one. 1993 was the FIRST year the deficits FINALLY started to reverse (with NO Republican votes by the way). This was 2 years BEFORE Newt came to town. I give the Republican (1996) credit for continuing this direction, but with Bush43 they soon lost went right back to massive (Reagan/Bush) deficit spending.
