I'm surprised that there would be any question at all about this being a Weather Report tune. Zawinul wrote it and it was a huge hit. Manhattan Transfer covered it later, with lyric by Jon Hendricks, and it was also a huge hit.From Wikipedia (which is correct):"Extensions" featured a cover of Weather Report's "Birdland", with lyrics by Jon Hendricks, the piece that has become The Manhattan Transfer's signature tune.Birdland is a true classic and I enjoyed watching this video. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that Manhattan Transfer wrote this - it was on their Cry Me Hot Seed album long before WR recorded it.

This is not a cover, the score was written by Joe Zawinul in 1977 and is on the Heavy Weather album. Manhatten Transfer covered it in 1979! :-)
