You, are an idiot.This video was made in 1997, when Rufus was on Geffen Records, He was not "Unknown".And the reason why Martha's in the video is because she does guest vocals, thus a reason to have her in it.

Yes - Gwen Stefani is the waitress - before she was famous! Martha Wainwright (Ru's sister) is Madama Butterfly - Rufus was pretty unknown when this song was relased and so family and friends were drafted in for the video shoot!

All the girls in the video are heroines from various operas - "Carmen", "Madame Butterfly" etc who all die tragically for love. Rufus is a huge opera fan and this song reflects his love of the genre.
