I must say that the manner in which the people of this country are approached by foreigners is disgusting. Comments such as people living through a "void", a "time warp" and finally seeing the light of modernity are utterly sickening.What makes a reporter think time stood still for 50 years in Albania? How shallow does a person have to be to not realize that for 50 years Albanians lived their lives albeit through dictatorship and isolation. Or does time only begin when one is "born-again"?

With regards to the missionaries themselves, they will be the reason for their own failure. They are all blinded by their dogma and lack of cultural sensitivity (i.e. the religious traditions).Albania is divided between urban centres (in which atheism prevails) and rural areas in which religious tradition is tied to the family and clan history. Therefore to ask someone to forget their family and their history for a free ride in a helicopter or a shabby outdoor cinema is beyond absurd.

Any missionaries that believe they will make inroads in Albania, are ignorant of the country's cultural and social norms and will surely be disappointed.Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism - the two fastest growing sects of Christianity - have absolutely no chance of being established in Albania. As a student of anthropology, I can tell you that the idea of a "personal relationship" with God does not appeal to Albanians. In fact, Albanians choose religion for tradition and community.
