It might be because I'm stoned, but I don't think it ever gets better than that.

Are you fond of 'sand dunes and salty air'?'Quaint little villages, here and there?' (Old Cape Cod) 'Love' your 'Grandma'. ;) My favorites are 'Detour' and 'Allegheny Moon'.

I saw him in the lionel hampton festival in 2002 at the University of Idaho. It was almost as if he willed himself to live long enough to perform one last time. Though he was bound to a wheelchair and his aid had to give him his sticks, he was still able to keep rhythm well for someone of his age who had suffered a stroke. It was remarkable.

I saw him in 1981, when it was still the KOOL Jazz Festival (yep, named for a cigarette). And let me tell you, daddy, that cat was MENTHOL COOL.

Did I read recently that he passed away penniless in Manhattan, NY? Dear God. If that's true, what a shame. What a gifted man.

Saw him once, years ago. Gooseflesh all over. Dude, he was old but he still was the bumpin'cat he ever was.
