If it's a higher-level elective, one would expect a smaller number of students. I don't think it really has any bearing on the intelligence of the individual students.Though I thank you for the vote of confidence. :)

It's usually like that in more math based sciences like physics, aerospace eng., and math itself of course. It doesn't mean they're all Einsteis, but that's one thing I like about studying physics at university - classes are smaller than in high school.
