I read the wikipedia page on Robert Preston and he once said in an interview that he based his "Last Starfighter" character on Hill. He was the original Hill in the play, but for the movie he wasn't the first choice. Thankfully the director, I think - or it was Meridith Willson, the author, said if Preston doesn't get the role then the movie doesn't get made.
