That's great Nina. I teach English in SE Asia, we've both seen the world. I'm sure you have interesting stories to tell, as do I. That has nothing to do with these issues though. I don't see the point in this continuing though. We're not going to agree, and I don't think anyone here is saying anything I can't see, any generalization, in defense of the status quo I in TV or hear on the radio.

Now, Iggy, I'm gonna tell you something fun. The most honorable deal that I ever cut, was with a black man in the outskirts of a small hick town in the middle of the African jungle, when I was ten years old. That man, although illiterate, understood everything about a deal: commitment, financial benefits, work performance, advantage, and not cheating a kid. It was my first deal in life, and what he taught has carried me through the years.

Furthermore, Iggy, when you do business for that long, there's something wonderful that happens: corporate memory! Business survival skills of what works and what doesn't. Better than any academic economist's book you could ever get your hands on. I think that you can put that in your economics pipe and smoke it. Don't forget the cognac though!

Iggy, I don't know about you and your agenda here. I'll tell you about mine. My family has done business in Africa and S.America for 120 years. I think I can teach you some about those environments; not just about business and communist influence, but also about the unintended consequences of wrong political moves - which always negatively impact people. Can't claim the same about Asia, though. Is that enough "theory" for you?

More of the same.

Do you know the difference between free trade and fair trade? Sounds like not. South America doesn't even know the word free, let alone free-trade.
IggyReed (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
People here have been making that point though, badly. What have you or the rest countered, when confronted how "free trade" is in practice? You respond with how it is supposed to work in practice. Great, communism is good theoretically, let's all ignore the system in practice? Why? It sounds so perfect in theory, who needs to analyze the ideas in practice when you have the fantasy land of theory alone?
IggyReed (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
"Real" economists? Hm, like Joseph Stiglitz, Karl Polanyi, Robin Hahnel, Herman Daly. Are THEY "real" economists, because they object to "free trade". Did you ever stop and think that "free trade" has been tried and has been a resounding failure Nina? Latin America has tried you pet policies, they failed miserably and people don't want them. Who cares what YOU think. Who are you but an anonymous poster on Youtube? Who cares if you ideas are failures, you like the idea of "free trade"...

iggy is saying free enterprise leads to gonorrhea while you're saying restricting free trade leads to repressed sexual feelings.
ninacalifornia (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Iggy - You are arguing the point that several individuals on this board have been trying to tell you for a while: There is no free market, and there needs to be one in every nation. The lack of free markets due to "anti" policies negatively impacts the general public. Governments/ideology should get out of the way. If you are a real economist you must know this by now.
