Jan Helfeld interviews Senator Harry Reid about government coercion. Reid maintains that taxation is voluntary despite all evidence to the contrary. How does Harry Reid get into this bind? Well, by arguing that the government is not forcefully taking money from some citizens through taxes in order to provide goods and services for others. In his attempt to dispute this fact, he finds himself arguing that taxes are voluntary, which by the way, is preposterous.

The waterboarding the CIA does is also voluntary, because the government does the waterboarding itself "instead of making the employer do it like in other countries".

It seems Reid thinks taxation is voluntary because you get to fill out your own confession form under duress of being charged with failure to file. After all, you make voluntary contractions of your skeletal muscles to fill out the form, so it must be voluntary, just like slavery was, since they moved their own muscles in fear of the whip. Maybe it would take the government directing your movements by firing off electrodes in your brain before Harry Reid would concede that taxes are involuntary.

Reid does seem a tad silly here. In once since the US does have a "voluntary" type system, but only in a meaninglesss technical sense. Obviously people are not given a choice of whether or not to pay taxes.

Harry Reid really comes off like a mental patient. You can't reason with him because he's crazy. But it's too wearisome to keep arguing and he's too aware of the power trip to simply throw him into a padded cell. So far at least. He's pathological. It's not enough to simply engage in violent acts. For people with his mental condition it's important the victim embraces the tormentor.

"We have withholding here too don't we?" "Huh?""Withholding?""With some programs yes."Yes, with some programs - programs like getting a paycheck.

Taxes are voluntary just like getting raped is voluntary. You really do have a choice - but if you choose not to you get punched in the eye and taken anyway. But there is a choice...I guess.

War is peace, slavery is freedom and taxation is voluntary.

Fuck you Harry Reid.

fjfjvmvm, obviously, you're a Socialist - which means you're either pathetically lazy, don't understand the purpose of Law, or both. The things you mention can also be provided through charity - and probably much more efficiently than under the burden of bureaucratic waste. The only "childish perspective" here is yours. The US wasn't built by Socialists - but it's being destroyed by them. Read "The Law" by Frederic Bastiat - you can read it online for free (which should appeal to you).

No - you're wrong. The Fed is a private corporation - and while it DOES control our government to a large extent, it's not controlled by anyone other than the central bankers who make it up. It's no more "Federal" than Federal Express, Federal Pest Control, Federal Way Pizza - or any number of other businesses with "Federal" in their names. They named it that way so that people would THINK it was part of the US Government - and it apparently works... on some people...
