every rifle has goods and bads. direct impingement system is inherently more accurate and lighter than piston system (AK-47, HK-416 for example), especially when firing in bursts or full-auto, but they are more maintenance intensive, more likely to jam, picky with kind of ammos, and have shorter service life. At the end, direct impingement system works better if you can afford it (hence why US uses it), but piston system is better value since it's more economical.

yeah but you more likely to kill someone over 200 yards with in m16 than with and ak depending on the model of the ak too.

eugene's "stoner 63" is my preferred rifle over the m16. the m14, though heavy and hard to see through, stomps them all in my eyes. when properly used it is extremely effective.

As the superheated combustion gas travels down the tube, it expands and cools. This cooling causes vaporized matter to condense as it cools depositing a much greater volume of solids into the operating components of the action. The increased fouling can cause malfunctions if the rifle is not cleaned as frequently as should be. AR15 jams more than AK.
